Microblading cons you should be aware of

That youthful and elegant frame you get from microblading your brows can be so tempting. Well, that is when it’s done right.

If, on the other hand, you fall victim of a microblading scam carried out by fake and unqualified person or an untrained artist, you’ll certainly not like the outcome. As the eyebrow treatment gains popularity, more people are offering eyebrow blading and cheap deals to lure customers in.

I know how helpful microblading can be, especially in helping to define your facial features and slashing your makeup time in half. However, there are some dark sides to microblading that you need to know about before making deciding if it’s right for you or not.

For anyone hearing the word microblading for the first time, you will need a little introduction to what it is.

What is microblading?

Although it has nothing to do with blades, microblading is the process of appling short strokes to the eyebrow with cosmetic ink to give the impression of hairs. It was first practiced in the ‘60s in medical offices, which was also when permanent makeup was being introduced to help ladies with thinning eyebrows. As at that time, it was so costly, no one really moved forward.

The sad truth about microblading

These are things I call microblading cons. Today, the story has changed. Every Sally and Mary wants to join the trade since it promises quick cash for the artist. Microbladding has grown tremendously over the last few years as more and more ladies want the perfect looking eyebrows.

Have you ever wondered why there’re so many advertisements asking people to come and be trained as professional microblading artists? Literally, everyday on the radio I hear at least one ad for microblading or eyebrow training school. Did you hear about the woman in El Paso with the botched brows?

The downside is that many of these people are unqualified and yet, they claim to teach how to microblade professionally. Their students attend class for a few days and students are then given a certificate. These newly “trained” individuals then start advertising for microblading specials or look for jobs in spas/salons.

Many people are coming to social media to tell their sad stories of how they got unflattering, infected or poor microblading jobs. Many of the people failed to do proper research before getting their eyebrows done.

So, how can you avoid a microblading nightmare?

  1. Ensure your artist is certified. Every state has different laws in place, but you need a tech that has specific microblading training, not just permanent makeup training. The two techniques are very different.
  2. Look for artist with a tattoo license. Every professional microblading artist, will have a license. If they are unlicensed, run for the door. The American Med Spa Association says, in California, an esthetician may perform microblading with their tattoo license.
  3. Reviews! Look for reviews on the specific artist. Put Google to work and search for reviews from past customers. You can often find reviews on Facebook too.
  4. Before & After Photos – You look at those before getting a tattoo right? Well, it’s a good idea to look at microblading before and after photos of your selected artist before you begin. This will give you an idea of their style and how well they actually perform the procedure.

While I love a great eyebrow, it can come with microblading cons. If your skin is prone to keloids or scaring, you could develop an infection on the eyebrow that turns into a nightmare. Infection can also be as a result of unsterilized instruments used during the procedure.

Of course, there is a possibility that the artist is just flat out not a good artist. In that case, you may end up with scary looking brows. And when you consider that microblading is semi-permanent (the discoloration never truly fades), you will really have a rethink before allowing just anyone to touch your brows. You can hide a bad tattoo on your back but can you hide the one on your face?

Precautionary steps to take

If you want to avoid any of the microblading cons mentioned above, then you should make sure of the following:

  • Can your skin type handle it? Do you have psoriasis or eczema, or a history of keloids? If so, microblading is not recommended.
  • Were you offered a consultation?
  • Is the microblading personnel an expert with certification and a license?
  • Can you see before and after photos?
  • Can the artist answer all of your questions?
  • Are they advertising a super cheap price? Remember, quality is rarely cheap!

If the answer to all these questions is yes, then you may have found a good artist. If any of the answers are no, I would highly recommend looking for another microblading artist in your area. The last thing anyone wants is to be unhappy, uneven eyebrows, or a nasty infection.

My intention with offering these microblade cons was never to scare anyone, but to shed some light on a topic not often talked about. Nightmares do happen, especially when untrained people get a blade in their hand. It’s important for everyone to know the pros and cons and what to look for in an artist before undergoing the procedure.

Final Thoughts

Microbladed brows can last for years, so be selective in whom you allow to do any treatment to your face. Do your research on the spa offering microblade treatment and the artist. Instead of shopping for cheap microblading, save up and go to a pro! Your face depends on it.

Hi Courtney, when eyebrow blading is done by a professional, you’ll have no issues. Just remember to do your research and remember what to look for.

  3. What a nightmare. If I ever decide to get microbladding, I would do my research. Just because someone offers a cheap price doesn’t mean you will get good quality service.

This definitely seems like a technique where a professional with great training is necessary. This looks great but may not be for me thanks to you informative review. Thanks for the advice.

I have microblading and I love everything about it. I was not pleasantly looking for a day or two in total (correction procedure counting as well) but it so worth it! My brows are very thin, you can see my skin through it all the time, it almost feel like am an old bold man on brow area. I will do the procedure again when needed.

  7. Natalia says:

I have bushy eyebrows, so I don’t need any extra strokes. However, my friend would love to read more about it for sure! I love the final effect, you look stunning! 🙂
