Makeup For Beginners: Everything You Need For Your Makeup Bag

what do i need for makeup

Have you been wondering what a makeup artist would consider to be a complete makeup kit? Are you new to makeup and not sure what you need? Perhaps you’ve been dreaming of building a makeup kit like the professionals do but don’t know where to start. Let’s talk about what you need to build a makeup kit with everything you need to prep, prime and create.

For the face

Prep mist – this is the first thing you apply to your face to moisturize and hydrate it in readiness for makeup.

Face primer – for a clean canvass to draw or apply your makeup, a face primer is your sure bet. It helps to minimize the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and imperfections. Check out how to pick the best primer for your skin to understand your options.

Color correctors – you don’t have to get the colors individually since a palette has many options you can choose from. Color corrector is good for concealing redness, hiding hyper pigmentation and reducing the appearance of dark cycles under the eye.

Foundation – of course, you need to create a base for your makeup and that is where you need foundation. You can find it in cushion compacts, sheer liquids, or full-cover formulas. And they come in different shades to suit different skin tones.

Face concealer – Even with the fullest coverage, some spots and blemishes can still find their way through it. You need a concealer to keep those spots in check.

Under eye concealer – Your eyes can make you look alert, dull, young, or old. All that puffiness from a hectic workload or emotional issues can be very obvious even under the heaviest foundation. And you don’t have to use your face concealer to cover it up since under eye concealers are designed just for that purpose; to brighten and highlight your eyes.

Bronzer – if you want your makeup to pop at the end of the day, a blush is your go-to-makeup to achieve that.

Blush – for that radiant finish-look, a blush on the apples of your cheeks will have you looking refreshed and alive.

Highlighter – whether you call it a highlighter or illuminator, highlighters help attract light to the focal points of your face like the brow bones, cheekbones, and the nose bridge. If you’re not sure how to apply it, check out this highlighter application guide.

Contour pencils and sticks – for sculpting or defining your face for a chiseled look. You can also use a face contouring palette

Loose powder – for setting your foundation and other makeup you applied.

Setting spray – for locking your makeup in place.

Makeup brushes– a good set of brushes will make or break a beautiful finish.

For the eyes

Eyeshadow primer – to prepare your eyes and prolong your eyeshadow. See, how to use eyeshadow primer.

Eyeshadow palette – comes with different shades of eyeshadow to suit your mood and the occasion.

Eyeliner pencil – for lining your upper lashes.

Mascara –  for days you want to highlight your natural lash or eyelash extensions.

Brow powder/pencil – for defining your eyebrows.

Eyeshadow Brushes – There are many burshes available and each does a different job. Check out the eyeshadow brush guide for tips on picking the best brushes.

For the lips

Lip balm – for protecting and hydrating your lips.

Lip liner – to highlight and protect your lips from lipstick bleeding.

Matte lipstick – for a shine-free and velvet-finish look.

Liquid, satin or cream lipstick – satin or cream lipsticks nourish and moisturize your lips, while liquid gives your lips that glossy of matte finish look.

Lip gloss – for drawing attention to your lips.

And there you have it! With this list, you can confidently build your makeup collection with stellar beauty products. Let me know what you think in the comment section or share a must-have of yours!

This is so helpful. I usually apply my moisturizer, bb cream, eye liner and a lip gloss.
