Should Lipstick Match Nail Polish?
In all my years as a beauty enthusiast and beauty blogger, I have received various questions from my readers on different beauty issues. And I’ve always answered their beauty related questions to the best of my ability. Most questions I get asked are about beauty trends and the importance.
Today, I have another question sent in by one of my readers. She asked me a simple question – should lipstick match polish?
I get it, matching your lipstick to your nail polish was a trend in the 1950s and well into the 90s. Then it made a comeback around 2013. I thought we had seen the end of the matchy-matchy beauty trend, but have we?
But one thing with fashion is that old trends always make it back into the industry.
Perhaps, you should consider setting aside any outfit that seems to have gone out of fashion because it might come back sooner than you expected. Beauty trends come and go based on celebrity style and designer followers.
Alright, coming back to my point of digression, should lipstick match nail polish? I’ll give you the basics with some tips from the pro’s and allow you decide on whether you should be forced to match lipstick and nail polish.
Matching your lipstick with your nail polish
This will give you that polished, ladylike, bold and chic look. It makes you appear as if you’ve made a lot of effort to appear stunning when in the actual sense you didn’t spend more than few minutes. To make things easier for you, makeup companies thought it would be wise to produce lipsticks with matching nail polish so you don’t have to deal with all the guesswork. Coordinating your nail polish to the color of your lipstick is perfect for an evening look.
Some makeup gurus will agree that lipstick should match your nails, but not all. It was a major trend several years ago for everything to match, but today, not so much. If you are a matchy-matchy person, then perhaps you’ll appreciate matching yours.
Not matching your lipstick to your nail polish
If you’re looking for that extra color pop that will separate you from the crowd, you’ll achieve it wearing colors that contradict instead. When you’re in your teens and early 20s, you can decide to be slightly mischievous or rebellious with your makeup and still be forgiven. Such contrasting makeup goes well with jeans and any other outfit you’d wear to a casual outing.
It’s 2019 not 1990 when we had to follow a set of fashion and style rules. Beauty trends come and go, but your style can be anything YOU like.
Now that you know the basics, I believe you can answer the question – should lipstick match nail polish. If you’re still not sure, let’s see what the beauty and style pro’s have to say.
Both styles look great and it’s always good to swap your beauty looks around, so just alternate between the two!

Nevertheless, whether you choose to match your lipstick with your nail polish or not, make sure you go with a color that complements your skin tone. If it bothers you, opt for a nude nail polish that matches everything.
And as always, if what you see in the mirror feels right, it doesn’t matter what the rules say. After all, the best way to create your own fashion sense is by trying out different things.
After all of that, I do not match my lipstick to anything but my outfit that day! I personally believe your lipstick needs to match your outfit, not your nails. So, I’d say, go for whatever you are comfortable with and remember that there are not true rules in how one sees beauty.
Let’s chat! Do you match your nails and lips?
Awesome content! Though I don’t like matchy lips and nails, I go with contrasting colours which would compliment each other
Great article! But I like contrasts 🙂 So my lipstic can be pink but nails turquoise 🙂 Great content!
This was a lovely read thank you so much for the advice. Definitely going to take into consideration matching my outfits more 🙂
I must say I don’t have enough nail polish colors to match it with lipstick!
Most ladies don’t. I go to the salin to have my naiks done, so I maybe own 2 bottles of polish.
I feel like acrylic nails are making a come back, and with gel nail polish it is hard to go get those changed daily – so I like your idea of just doing neutral colors or colors that match your skin tone. Was trying to decide what to do when I go to Poland, and I think the nude nails is just the ticket
Acrylic nails are coming back. The only issue for me is they are not durable enough. When they started offering pink and white I switched immediately and rarely break a nail now.
I’m not sure I’m for matching lipstick and nails. I noticed the many women seem to be wearing white nail polish a lot here, so can you imagine women wearing white nail polish and white lipstick? Lol I cannot. I’m more for matching my nail polish with my outfit than my lips an
I’m with you. I match my lipstick to what I’m wearing. I know a lot if gals who insist finernails and toenails have to match too.
You know! I often wondered the same thing. I generally like nude polish, but every so often, I’ll pop some color on. I think its solely up to the person. I liked your response as well.
That’s a great idea, i never thought of that ahha. Now i have somwthing to try. Thanks for sharing
My lipstick never matches my nail polish. The only thing it matches is going to be rest of my makeup x

This makes a lot of sense reading from a seasoned beauty blogger . Thank you for your beautiful message.
I’m with you. I match my lipstick to my outfit. The only thing I match my nails to is my toenails. I try to keep them the same.
I totally think lipstick and nail polish should match. If it could come in sets that would be perfect!
I’m not sure I’m for matching lipstick and nails. I noticed the many women seem to be wearing white nail polish a lot here, so can you imagine women wearing white nail polish and white lipstick? Lol I cannot. I’m more for matching my nail polish with my outfit than my lips and my lips matching my makeup.
Thanks for sharing, this was an interesting read. I definitely don’t think they need to match. Maybe just similar tones for special occasions (:
