How to style damaged hair – Plus great tips to fix it

I got a mail from one of my readers asking me to help her out with styles she can use for her damaged hair. So, today’s topic is for all the ladies battling with split ends, weak hair, colored-treated hair and any other hair issues you may be having.

It always feels good to try out a new hair color or heat-style our hair. The downside to doing this is that you may end up with a damaged hair, especially if you do this often.

While some hair damages are as a result of the products we put on our hair which contains chemicals, some people just have with weak hair. If you’re already frustrated with your hair like my reader that sent me the mail, do not fret.

I’d like to start off by giving you tips on what you can do to start growing out healthy hair underneath that damaged hair.

Stop using heat – I know you’re always in a hurry and want a quick fix to drying or styling your hair. If you want to grow out healthy hair, stop using heat consistently on your hair. Let your hair air-dry each time you want to dry or roll it and in no time you will notice impressive improvements. I know you may not get the look you want, but more heat means more damage.

Check the ingredients in your hair products – If the ingredient on your shampoo, relaxer, gel or any other hair product you use is more than you can understand, please rethink that product. The lesser the ingredients, the lesser the chemicals and harm it could cause. Look for paraben free or natural based hair products.

Go natural – Having pointed out that harsh chemicals in your hair products could be the reason your hair is suffering, you’d be better off if you go with natural products on your hair. And you can easily find them in your kitchen. Avocado, shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil are good for pampering your hair.

3 hairstyles for damaged hair

The sweeping ponytail – this remains a chic and simple hairstyle that you can wear with any outfit. To create the impression of volume, you can add some panache to it by gently pushing the top forward. After securing it with a protective hair band, you can add hair extensions to the tips or wear it as it is. Spray some light-hold spray to hold it in place.

The urban updo – for that edgy sexy look, section out and clip your front pieces. Then twist the hair that is remaining into a bun. Secure the bun with bobby pins. Next, unclip the front and push it toward your updo bun. Give them some nudge while at it and when you’re satisfied with your look, pin them in place. You can use light spray to create chunky looking wisps.

Curls without the heat – on a hair that’s a little wet, apply hair mousse and twist into several buns and allow to sit for some time. When dry, take down the hair and you will be left with beautiful soft waves. for more volume, gently separate the curls with your fingers. You can also apply some light-hold spray for a longer lasting curl.
