Everywhere you look; there is a chance that you will see one lush lash starring back at you. Eyelash extension did not become popular today, but they continue gaining popularity.

Many find applying false lashes to be complicated and/or messy. I can agree with this totally, if your a perfectionist like myself, perfect placement can be challenging at times. The idea of not having to perfectly place false eyelashes is promising. And this is why there are so many questions being asked about this very popular beauty practice. Plus, the fact that eyelash extensions are applied to the natural lash, there is no look of lash on top of lash.

About 8 years ago I had my 1st set of lash extensions. While I fully enjoyed the full appearance of my new fabulous eyelashes, I found them a bit much for me to keep up with. The refill appointments and my love for our salty beaches, didn’t make me the ideal candidate for them. It’s a good idea to keep in mind that they are high maintenance just like nails.

I’ve been asked a lot recently about the benefits of lash extensions, types, care, and cost. I decided to make this FAQ to help answer some of the popular questions.

What is an eyelash extension?

Lash extensions are false lashes that are either applied individually or on a strip to the natural lashes for a more defined and darker lash. Eyelash extensions last for a few weeks generally, and do not require daily removal. They can be customized in length and fullness.

What are the benefits?

The biggest benefit of having classic or hybrid eyelash extensions are instant gratification. You literally wake up with full beautiful eyelashes every day. They are perfect for weddings, proms, and for those who don’t have time to apply false lashes every day. Additionally, they are custom shaped for your eyes and created to accentuate your eye features.

Do I need to prep my lashes before getting a lash extension?

No, you don’t need to prep your lashes. It’s advisable that you don’t apply any makeup to your eyes so that the lashes can glue on better to your lashes.

What are the types of lash extensions available?

The two basic types are mink and silk. Mink are hollow hairs and the softest and lightest extensions that give your lashes that flirty and lush look. Silk, on the other hand, has a darker and a more dramatic shade with a beautiful shine. Many lash studios are offering newer types of lash extensions including hybrid, 3d, 4d, and classic natural eyelash extensions.

What does full and partial eyelash set mean?

A full eyelash set is when a lash extension is applied to each and every of your lashes and usually takes about 2 hours or more. A partial set is when the lash is applied to some parts of your lashes or just the outer lashes for a more natural and subtle look. It takes a shorter time than a full set.

Can I use mascara and makeup remover when I have lash extension on?

It really depends on the type of lash extension you have on. If you have on thick lash extension, you may not have any need for mascara. There are some mascara’s that are designed for lash extensions and can be applied to the tips of the lashes. For makeup remover, as long as it doesn’t contain oil, then you are good. Same goes for eyeliner and eye shadow; both should be oil-free when you have on lash extension.

Will I need a lash curler?

No, you won’t because the lashes curl naturally. Using an eyelash curler can damage the extensions.

Can my eyelash extensions get wet?

This is a great question, but, you’ll find each lash professional has their own recommendations. Amazing Lash Studio and the Lash Loft say yes they can be wet after 24-48 hours yet. Both also recommend gently face cleaning. Beauty corner recommends keeping your lashes away from steam while showing to reduce the rick of fallout.

From my own personal experience, I can say they do feel odd when they get wet. Even with just washing your face. The extensions feel heavy, almost like a cheap pair of flasies until they dry.

Will lash extensions damage my natural lashes and what are the risks?

If you have any type of eye infection, allergies, mites, or take any medications that may cause Blepharitis, you pose a risk of new or worsening infection.

Choosing a lash professional and not tugging at or pulling out the lashes will ensure that your natural lashes encounter no harm. A trained eyelash technician knows exactly how to properly apply lashes. Unless you have an allergic reaction or do not follow care instructions, your natural lashes should be fine. The biggest risk with getting extensions are using a non trained professional, possible allergic reaction and eye infection due to not properly cleaning.

I had mine for several months and did not experience any issues. I was very careful not to tug or pull at them and I did not use any mascara that would need to be washed off.

Now, if you do not go to a professional for application, you run the risk of damaging your own eyelashes and infections.

How much do eyelash extensions cost ?

Eyelash extensions cost will vary based upon the kind of material used. Typically, your initial lash application can range somewhere between $100-$200 depending on your location. Lash extensions cost a monthly maintenance as well and eyelash refills can cost an additional $55-$65 per session. This will replace any missing or lost lashes and keep yours looking fresh.

How long do lash extensions last?

If medical grade extension glue is used, you can expect the lashes to last between 4 to 6 weeks. By that time, the natural lash would have grown out and pushed the extensions and the glue upward. That is why experts suggest going to your lash artist every 3-4 weeks for a retouch.

How do I remove eyelash extensions?

Your lash extensions will grow out naturally, but you can also visit your lash artist for safe removal if you would like them removed quicker. Do not try to remove them yourself. You could damage your natural eyelashes and even skin.

What are eyelash extension care and upkeep requirements?

Keeping your new lashes looking beautiful will require upkeep. Just like you brush your teeth and hair, your extensions need to be brushed as well. Using a clean spoolie to brush them will work and will keep them from getting tangled. Remember to keep all skincare products away from them and cleaning is necessary. Eyelash extensions require cleaning just like your hair. Your lash profession will recommend a preferred product for keeping them clean and germ free.

Where can I get eyelash extensions done?

When you are searching for where to get eyelash extensions, make sure you’re going to a licensed esthetician or, if permitted, a professional with a cosmetology license to do eyelash extensions. There are a few states that have no regulations, which can open the door for non-trained people to offer services they have no professional training in.

You can often find eyelash services in spa’s, high end salon’s and lash studios. Ask your lash pro what training programs they have completed, and don’t be embarrassed to ask for proof. If you’re unsure of the requirements in your state, consult with the board of cosmetology.

I highly encourage you to check out reviews on any lash bar or person you are considering using. Looking on Facebook or Google for reviews and even the BBB. I also recommend avoiding purchasing discount sessions on websites like Groupon. There is no way to verify if they are licensed eyelash technicians before purchasing. These are your eyes we are talking about and you can never be too cautious.

Final Thoughts

Now you’ve got plenty to of things to consider before you choose if eyelash extensions are right for you. If you are feeling like false lashes are too much of a hassle and you’re okay with the additional maintenance and lash extensions cost, it may be beneficial for you to find a trained lash specialist/ eyelash technician and enquirer about a consultation if you feel like they are a good fit for you. If you are not prepared for the maintenance cost or have very sensitive eyes, you may benefit more from a different option.
