Many of my clients often ask me how to pick the best makeup based on skin tone color and undertones. A person with an olive skin tone may tend to navigate to completely different shades than someone with a fair skin tone. The key to accentuating your features is knowing your skin tone color and the right makeup that goes with it.

People with fair skin tone usually find it challenging to get the right lipstick, foundation and just about anything that has to do with makeup. Understanding how to accent your skins undertones will help you pick the best colors of makeup.

If you’ve been asking yourself what’s my skin tone?, let’s look at helping you find what works best for your complexion.

Get it right with the undertones

The first step to getting it right with your makeup is to know your undertones. That means you need to know whether your skin tone is cool, warm or neutral. You may not be able to tell your correct skin tone on the surface without carrying out some exercises.

To help determine your undertone, get a white towel or clothing and also off-white clothing. Raise the two clothing to your makeup-free face and see which one complements your skin the most. If the white suits you better, your undertone is warm. If it’s off-white, then your undertone is cool. But if the two looks good on you, then you are neutral.

You can also use your vein to determine your undertone. Green signifies warm undertone, while blue means your undertone is cool. If you have a combination of both colors (bluish-green veins) then your undertone is neutral.

Color-match for different undertones

Now that you understand how to figure out which undertone you fall within, here is a color-match to go with any of them:

Choosing the right makeup for your skin tone

Foundation

how to pick skin undertones

When choosing a foundation, take your undertone into consideration so as to choose the best foundation that complements your skin tone. Many foundations are available for specific undertones. If you are having a hard time selecting the best shade, try to get color matched or view color charts online for the brand.

Lipstick colors

If you are fair skinned, you can comfortably wear bold and bright lipstick colors and still stun. Lipstick nudes with a hint of peach or pink note will make your skin come alive. For cool undertones, go for peachy-coral hues while warm undertone can go for red or orange lipstick to finish off the look.

Blush

You may find it difficult getting the right blush color that won’t leave you looking like your skin is flushed after applying it. Not to worry; go for peach, pink or coral blushes to make your makeup pop. Coral and peach blushes tend to suit people with warm undertones, while light mauves and rosy pinks suit those with cool undertones.

Eyeshadow

For warm undertones, you can go for earthy and bronze colors. If yours is cool, metallic and jewel tones will suit you best. However, you can always experiment with different shades until you arrive at the one you love better.

Bronzer

For warm, cool and neutral undertones, any bronzer with a touch of shimmery pink or peach will do just fine on you. It will warm up your cheeks.
