Makeup is one of the allies of feminine beauty and, in fact, most women use it often. Makeup can help the skin appear smoother and even, hide scares, conceal large pores, and hide under eye bags. It also allow’s us to express our creativity by making our lashes longer, enhance our eye’s with shadow, and add touches of color to our face.

The problem is that, it’s easy to not feel like removing the makeup at night. After a long day, we’re ready for bed and often skip makeup removal. I get it, I have been guilty of this myself a time or two.

Waking up with day old makeup on leaves mascara particles in the eyes, eyeliner smeared and yesterdays makeup look no longer looks flawless. Sleeping in makeup can leave the face covered in foundation (or other cosmetics) and bacteria that can be found on makeup brushes and mascara. This bacterial can lead to skin damage, clogged pores, and pimples.

While it may not seem like a big deal, it is! When makeup is left on overnight it sets our skin up for a disaster now and later on in life.

Consequences of not washing makeup off at night

1. Dry skin

The dryness in the skin is one of the first consequences we often notice from sleeping with makeup on. The remains of cosmetics, added to the impurities that adhere to the skin during the day, affect the natural production of oils and reduce the ability of natural moisturizing. When the skin dries out it’s common to feel rough patches from the accumulation of dead cells. It’s important to take makeup off every night and use a light moisturizer to replenish moisture in the skin.

2. Loss of natural brightness

While many try to avoid glare by excessive production of fat, most want to retain the natural sheen that keeps young skin. However, as a result of the negative effects of make-up, dead cells begin to accumulate on the surface and that healthy tone decreases noticeably. This happens when pores become clogged and there are a number of difficulties in their oxygenation process.

3. Acne and blackheads

The remains of cosmetics are attached to the particles of debris that remain on the surface of the skin that clog pores and generate unsightly comedones and blackheads. Since natural oils are retained, the skin tends to become inflamed and is susceptible to develop acne and other skin disorders. You can help prevent breakouts by removing makeup everyday.

This is one of the most habitual causes of acne and blackheads.

4. Dry and cracked lips

Ouch! The delicate skin of the lips is quite sensitive and requires care to stay healthy and free of imperfections. When left over foundation and lipstick are left on overnight the cells lose their ability to regenerate and there becomes a buildup of dead skin that makes them appear dry.

5. Falling eyelashes and eyebrows

The eyelashes and eyebrows also suffer when mascara and false lash glue products are not removed. The chemicals in these cosmetics prevent them from oxygenating normally. As a result, it slows down its growth process and leads to problems of excessive lash fall. Weakness, breakage, and lack of growth may also be a result of not removing properly every night.

6. Premature Wrinkles

Contaminants that are retained in the skin by not properly removing makeup before bed can penetrate through the pores and cause premature deterioration of collagen and elastin.
This increases sagging and leads to the development of fine wrinkles, fine lines and other signs of aging. Isn’t the point of wearing makeup to make you look younger, conceal imperfections and/or make you feel good about yourself? If premature wrinkles appear, you’re not going to be happy.

Many of these issues can be prevented by simply removing makeup every evening. Try to make it a habit to ensure you go to bed with a clean face nightly. If you’re used to sleeping in makeup, now is the time to correct it before any damage to your skin happens.
