Ever since the beauty blender found its way into our makeup bags, we haven’t stopped loving this beauty tool. Beauty blenders and sponges are great for; applying foundation, smoothing serums or even blending out concealer.

By the time you learn how to use a beauty blender the right way, you will wonder how you ever survived without it all along.

How to use a beauty blender

The first thing you should know about using a beauty blender is that it is designed to be used wet. In fact, how wet it is determines the result you end up with. If you want a fuller-looking finish, you should use the beauty blender dry as it comes. But if you want a light, sheer, and natural finish when applying your foundation, you should make sure that the sponge is damp before using it.

How to wet a beauty blender

You don’t need anything special to wet a beauty blender. Just run the sponge under running tap water, squeeze out the excess so that the sponge only picks up what you need without soaking up excess product. You don’t want the sponge to be dripping wet, so make sure you squeeze excessive water out.

Unlike the normal practice of applying a face primer onto your face before using a beauty blender to blend it in, you can use your makeup sponge to apply your primer too. Apply the primer directly on the blender and use the same tapping motion to cover your entire face. If it’s your 1st time using a beauty blender, instead of smearing the makeup on your face with the sponge, you use a bouncy or tapping motion to apply the makeup for an airbrushed finish.

However, you can still continue applying primer by hand or with anther tool if you’re comfortable doing so.

Tips and Tricks

  • For a precise makeup application, especially when blending or contouring under your eyes, wrap an elastic band around your beauty blender so that you can have two different parts of the sponge. The smaller part will be for applying the makeup product, while the second part will be for blending out the product.
  • There are a variety of makeup sponge shapes. I’d suggest with the basic egg shape to see if you like using a sponge before investing in more. This shape can doubles in size depending on the level of wetness which can help you control coverage.

How to care for your beauty blender

Do not allow weeks to go by without washing your beauty blender! And while you may be tempted to use just about any washing liquid to clean it, this might give you breakouts because of the residue that remains after you have given it a thorough rinse. Instead, opt for a makeup brush cleaner like Sephora Tool Cleaner, Blendercleanser, baby shampoo or any mild antibacterial soap.
